IELTS topics description
Education — in Writing task2 and Speaking part3, there are common philosophical questions in essays, such as "Should children be able to choose their school curriculum? What problems could it trigger?" or "Some people believe we should study new things permanently through life. To what extent do you agree?". In letters, an often task is "Write to your manager about a course you would like to attend and explain (1) what course it is, (2) how you will manage your work time, (3) how this course will help you to be more effective".
In Speaking part1, it is usually about what subjects you liked the most at school, why you chose this university, where you like to study — at home, or outside, and so on. In part 2 there will be something like "Tell me about a skill that was very hard to learn".

If the IELTS Task doesn't say ‘write to a friend’ or 'write to your family member', the letter style is formal (in fact, about 2/3 of all IELTS letters are formal). In a formal letter, you should follow the correct style — be polite and do not use contractions.
